Jeju Vs Okinawa
The VT Artsalon (hereinafter referred to as VT) has launched its long-term project "Island Hopping - Reversing Imperialism" since 2017. This project supports the re-establishment of images of geopolitics in East Asia. Because the western part of the Pacific was used as a rubber in the political game - whether it was the concept of "chain location" war or the first strategy of "island hopping" in the Second World War - VT started a meditation program. how can this region shake off the "Asian" model given by occidental colonialism and regain its identity.

This project focuses on the island chain of East Asia and retraces the process of island rise during wars. In 2017, VT hosted two back-to-back shows titled "Lander" and "Vessel" in collaboration with Filipino director Patrick D. Flores. Reiterating the premise of the program "Island Hopping - Reversing Imperialism," the two shows use the islands as a place of departure to explore the relationship between invaders and invaders, international and local, as also between power and uncertainty. Despite the epidemic of CCIDID-19 in the world, VT led a group of Taiwanese artists to participate in the "Okinawa Asia International Peace Project" in 2020. Taking a professional view, it studied the history of the terrible war and promoted world peace, with the aim of overcoming the evil times plagued by conflicts and conflicts between the great powers.
This year, the "Okinawa・Jeju・Taiwan Peace Art Exchange Exhibition" is organized by Okinawan photographer Higa Toyomitsu and is supported by 9 other excellent artists from Okinawa and Jeju. The shows revolve around places of conflict in the history of East Asia, such as the Second World War (Battle of Okinawa), the Jeju April 3 incident, and the recent attack on Myanmar. This exhibition seeks to confront the enduring legacy of colonial East Asian history by presenting academic and regional cooperation. It presents the following question to the public: why do we live here and now in 2021, still wanting to discuss the issues of colonialism and peace.
We hope that the people who live on the island will stop looking to the west, and look at their island. Only by doing this will we be able to release the spirit of colonialism that haunts this region, establish a relationship with our neighbors through a specific island identity, and redefine Asia in terms of non-existence. knowledge and speech.
On the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II (2020), the "Okinawa Asia International Peace Art Festival 2020" was held in Okinawa. More than 100 artists, historians, historians, and peace researchers from Okinawa, Jeju, and Taiwan participated under the theme of "Peace, Desire, and Coexistence." It became a hot topic in Okinawa at the time.

With the participation of writers. from different cultures, we saw the potential of an unprecedented Okinawa art scene.
Since 2017, with the participation of artists from Taiwan and Jeju Island, many events from the exchange between the three neighboring regions have become a special feature of the "Okinawa Asia International Art Festival 2020 ".
This year, "Okinawa・Jeju・Taiwan Peace Art Exchange Exhibition" features ten artists from the Mabuni Peace Project, seven from Okinawa, and three from Jeju Island. We hope to deepen the artistic revolution in Taiwan by thinking about art, culture, and peace in Asia.

The list below is the publication of Taiwanese Peace activist Emily on Inter-island solidarity for peace including the publication of the August Peace Camp on the island of Jeju.
My name is Emily. I am from Taiwan. As an international peace activist, since 2011, I have been living in Gangjeong and I have been fighting together against the boat project in Gangjeong, Jeju Island. Through the battle of Gangjeong, I learned the painful history of Jeju and I realized the true suffering of Okinawa. These experiences brought me many big question marks on my island of Taiwan where I was born and raised, and lead me to learn more about Taiwan, and that's how I started to know that Jeju, Okinawa and Taiwan are under one. the ebb and flow of the tides of history. In the end the dream was found to have peace with all these islands included.
Currently a ship is being built in Jeju Island, and in the future, we are worried that the air base will soon be rebuilt and Jeju can expand and expand the military such as Okinawa. (Alttre airbase was built by a Japanese and currently the ownership of the land is under the Ministry of Defense of Korea, which means that at any time, the Korean government can use the land to rebuild the atmosphere.)
If we look at Okinawa and think about the situation of Jeju, it is easy to think that these two islands and other islands that are suffering from the US base should build relations with each other to drive out the forces of America. Yes, I agree with that too.
Jeju Island's Most Beautiful Place To Visit
But the situation in Taiwan is a bit different because there is no longer a US base in Taiwan. The fact is that in the past during the winter, there are many US bases in Taiwan as well because the ROK government in Taiwan is a US ally. When Okinawa changed its time from the US military to the Japanese government in 1972, Okinawa did not remove the US bases but loaded other US bases, and in Taiwan, no a characteristic left by the US. the end of the cold war.
With the China Threat Doctrine, Taiwan is under the umbrella of the US military. We have just moved out of the winter season into the new cold war. Under the competition and the balance of military power between China and the US, Taiwan is a sad country that enjoys the peace of suffering. Our sufferings are caused under the same shape even though it looks different.
Source: Information from the Council of "Against the US base in East Asia, Listen to the voice of Takae" After the "Taiwan Relations Act / TRA" Republic of China for the survival of Taiwan depends on social relations and the US. If there had been no Korean War, if China had not joined the Korean War, the US would have left Chiang Kai-Shek's KMT government and returned to Taiwan. During the establishment of relations between the US and the People's Republic of China in 1972, the ROC (Taiwan) was expelled from the UN and faced the threat of dissolution. However, in 1979, due to the heat of the "China Threat" doctrine of the Taiwan group in the US, the Taiwan Relations Act was enacted. The economic and military ties with the US have not been broken and continue to this day. The military relationship here means that the US provides arms to Taiwan (Sales), with a verbal promise that, in return, the US will defend Taiwan. In the War on Terror, the ROC revealed its position in support of the US. During the Afghanistan War and the Iraq War, the ROC government also provided economic aid and aid such as rice.
In the region of North East Asia, these three islands are in the same corner of conflict which has its own history and economic base through natural resources. Since we are in the same region, I think Taiwan, Okinawa, and Jeju should jointly recognize the 'DMZ Peace Islands movement'.
