Jet Dog Fight - If you hope to win, your strengths must outweigh your opponent's weaknesses. As a young second lieutenant in pilot training, I learned this lesson the hard way.
I used to fly basic fighter maneuvers, also known as dogfights. My plan was to flag down my trainer with his F-16 and once we passed—at 1,000 mph—I could maneuver my jet and gun him down.

In the first set I called a quick merge and pulled the club back. At 50 pounds of force, the stick moved fully back, but only about an inch—a design feature to make the jet as responsive as possible. Pulling out the big stabilizers on the tail, I got to 9G in less than a second.

At nine times the force of gravity, my body weight was over 2,000 pounds. As the blood seeped from my head to my arms and legs, a crushing force pushed me back into my chair. If drained enough, I lose consciousness and often hit the floor before waking up. To combat this, I did anti-J stretching maneuvers—squeezing my legs and abs, while taking short, sharp breaths to keep the tension in my lungs. Even with effective G-pressure, I lost my peripheral vision as the world closed in until it looked like I was looking through a roll of toilet paper.
For the next minute I tried to maneuver my jet to shoot down my instructor. He was easily able to thwart my game plan and call out "knock it" so we could restart the fight. The next three matches ended in the same way. By this time, I was out of breath and tired of fighting him and Jay. We ended up doing two more sets, but instead of breaking up the fight, he shot me on both.

He was right. Being in my mid-20s, I should be in better shape than people in their early 40s. There was no way I could be superior in technique with more experience than I had. But my poor fitness and performance was completely under my control at the end of the flight. His weakness was greater than my strength which meant that I had zero chance of winning that day.

I have reflected on that lesson many times. Not just for me, but as a pack commander in charge of a hundred planes. As a weak force, you must find an area on the battlefield where your strength is greater than the enemy's weakness. If you can't find it, you're having a bad day. Similarly, if you are in power, a strong force, it is important to maximize your weaknesses so that you feel more than your enemy's strengths.

Once considered the top dog, the F-15 is now giving way to younger aircraft. In training, the variant still performs well, but that says more about the quality of the pilot than any inherent advantage of this platform in the WVR arena. Equipped, equipped and powerful, it is still a respectable aircraft.
