Jet Dog Fight - If you hope to win, your strengths must outweigh your opponent's weaknesses. As a young second lieutenant in pilot training, I learned this lesson the hard way.

I used to fly basic fighter maneuvers, also known as dogfights. My plan was to flag down my trainer with his F-16 and once we passed—at 1,000 mph—I could maneuver my jet and gun him down.

In the first set I called a quick merge and pulled the club back. At 50 pounds of force, the stick moved fully back, but only about an inch—a design feature to make the jet as responsive as possible. Pulling out the big stabilizers on the tail, I got to 9G in less than a second.

At nine times the force of gravity, my body weight was over 2,000 pounds. As the blood seeped from my head to my arms and legs, a crushing force pushed me back into my chair. If drained enough, I lose consciousness and often hit the floor before waking up. To combat this, I did anti-J stretching maneuvers—squeezing my legs and abs, while taking short, sharp breaths to keep the tension in my lungs. Even with effective G-pressure, I lost my peripheral vision as the world closed in until it looked like I was looking through a roll of toilet paper.

For the next minute I tried to maneuver my jet to shoot down my instructor. He was easily able to thwart my game plan and call out "knock it" so we could restart the fight. The next three matches ended in the same way. By this time, I was out of breath and tired of fighting him and Jay. We ended up doing two more sets, but instead of breaking up the fight, he shot me on both.

In the discussion, after the flight, my heavy breathing was evident on the tape. He interrupted and said, “How do you expect to win today? I have 15 years of experience flying fighter jets, and you're nowhere near that, but I do

He was right. Being in my mid-20s, I should be in better shape than people in their early 40s. There was no way I could be superior in technique with more experience than I had. But my poor fitness and performance was completely under my control at the end of the flight. His weakness was greater than my strength which meant that I had zero chance of winning that day.

I have reflected on that lesson many times. Not just for me, but as a pack commander in charge of a hundred planes. As a weak force, you must find an area on the battlefield where your strength is greater than the enemy's weakness. If you can't find it, you're having a bad day. Similarly, if you are in power, a strong force, it is important to maximize your weaknesses so that you feel more than your enemy's strengths.

Tactics, training and luck are the factors that determine who survives a visual range air combat. Despite the modern emphasis on ranged combat, most fighter-versus-fighter engagements were fought at close range. The following ten are the best fighters for this mission. This order is more or less arbitrary, and different aircraft have advantages at different altitudes and airspeeds. By its very nature, any top ten is simplistic and should serve as a basis for discussion rather than a conclusion.

Once considered the top dog, the F-15 is now giving way to younger aircraft. In training, the variant still performs well, but that says more about the quality of the pilot than any inherent advantage of this platform in the WVR arena. Equipped, equipped and powerful, it is still a respectable aircraft. According to reports, in subsequent exercises against India, the Russian aircraft was able to use superior maneuvers to defeat the Su-30, despite having more maneuver experience at low speeds. Powerful and reliable, and flown by some of the best fighter pilots in the world (in USAF service), it remains a very respectable adversary, especially at medium altitude.

Chinese rumors describe the J-10 as doing well in DACT exercises against the much larger Su-27/J-11. With a maximum G rating of -3 / +9 and a maximum sustained spin load of 8.9g, this type has demonstrated impressive performance at several public air shows. In turn radius, low visual signature, low speed capabilities and excellent pilot visibility scores highly.

The Viper remains strong in the mission it was designed for: fighting close range dogs. The Viper has gotten thicker with age, so early block aircraft, along with JHMCS and modern missiles, are very lively, such as the AIM-9X, Python 5, and IRIS-T are respectable adversaries. It is short and difficult for its opponents to maintain visual tabs, has a significant turn rate, and maintains power better than larger winged counterparts such as the Mirage 2000. Performance similar to the F-16 Typhoon below 10,000 feet. . Most F-16 models have a better thrust-to-weight ratio than the Super Hornet (if similarly equipped). Python 5 is considered one of the best air-to-air missiles with the largest weapons engagement zone (WEZ) and high resistance to countermeasures. According to a defense writer close to Britain's Typhoon Force, RAF pilots were more interested in the F-16 than the Gripens they encountered in war games.

Despite its age, the MiG-29 is still a very capable fighter and shares many of the Flanker's weapon systems. The Indian MiG-29K/KUB with TopOwl helmet and R-73E is a better equipped variant in the WVR scenario, but is generally limited to 7G, while the '29 land-based missiles are capable of 9G. When the MiG-35 enters service, it will be the world's most agile fighter in the low-speed regime, as anyone who has witnessed the MiG-29OVT's aggressive physics attitudes will testify. However, due to the MiG-35's unique power-to-weight ratio, post-stall maneuvers must be used with great care to be effective.
