The engine began development in 1929 as a new engine for a new generation of fighter and bomber aircraft that would be capable of higher speeds, higher altitudes, higher payloads and longer flight times.

The initial plan was to use the engine on three large aircraft carriers, aerodynamic bombers, fighters and rigid airships, namely the USS Akron and the USS Macon.

Both aircraft would ultimately be lost in accidents before the engine died, the USS Akron was destroyed in a major storm off the coast of New Jersey in 1933, killing 73 of the 76 on board.

The then-new Allison V-1710's true home would be in the U.S. fixed-wing aircraft. The Allison was fitted to early versions of the American P-51 Mustang, such as the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, the American F-82 Twin Mustang, and the Bell P-39 Airacobra .

Many Allison V12s were installed in the twin-engine Lockheed P-38 Lightning. This example was called the "Putt Putt Maru", and it is Colonel Charles H MacDonald and Al Nelson who are behind it. Image courtesy of the USAF.

After the war, when thousands of military surplus Allison engines flooded the civilian market, they were quickly put to work in motorsports applications, especially drag racing, land speed racing, tractor and hydroplane racing without restrictions

In these fields it was not uncommon to see forced-induction Allisons producing over 3,200 hp, although the time between rebuilds was usually very short.
