Three of Nebraska's state historic parks mark the locations of military forts from America's frontier days. Fort Atkinson, built at present-day Fort Calhoun at the recommendation of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, was active from 1820 to 1827, and the reconstructed outpost includes living history exhibits during the summer. Fort Hartsuff is a restored infantry outpost with limestone/concrete buildings from the era of the fort that defended the North Loup River Valley from 1874-1881. Fort Kearney was a stop on the Oregon-California Trail as well as Pony Express riders. Today, the park features a recreated warehouse and other exhibits of the area's history.

At this museum, you'll find a glimpse into military history at a German POW camp near Atlanta during World War II. You'll also want to check out the Veterans Kiosk, a local repository that contains a database of thousands of veterans from all different branches of service, including their biographies, photos and stories.
This outdoor memorial honors the work and legacy of Andrew Jackson Higgins, which Dwight D. In Eisenhower's words, "he was the man who won the war for us." Columbus natives built the Higgins Boat, a landing craft that was key to the Allied victory in World War II. The exhibit, which features a replica of Utah Beach in Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, France, includes bronze soldier statues and actual sand samples from the D-Day beaches, as well as a reconstruction of Higgins' craft built from the original plans.
